Before becoming plants, Manduru and Huituc were human sisters about to marry brothers.   Manduru, the older sister, had a series of affairs. First, a man who later became the squirrel had sex with her.   Later, she had a secret affair with a man who became the dolphin accepting fish from him and giving him manioc.  Finally the two sisters entered into a relationship with the two brothers who later became swallow- tail kites.  The two brothers offered fish to the girls and sent them to bathe their future mother-in-law.   They warned the girls not to bathe her in hot water but the girls playfully did bathe their future mother-in-law in very hot water, melting the old lady .   As a result the girls were abandoned by their husbands.   The story then continued as follows:

On the Origin of Manduru and Huituc
Narrated by Luisa Cadena
Translated by Tod Swanson

In the afternoon when they were left behind (the two sisters) said (to each other),  ‘Now what is going to happen?  We are going to stay right here.  What will we become?’ The one said.  ‘Since I have a hairy vagina I am going to turn into manduru.’ The other sister said, ‘I am hairless. I don’t have hairs.  Since I don’t have hair I am a naked vagina.  I will turn into huituc.
I am going to be in the mud while you will stand in good soil.’ First the huituc tree stood up.  ‘I am going to be huituc. You be manduru.’ She said.  ‘Tuluj!’  It sounded.   She cried,  ‘Aiii!’   Again ‘Tuluj aiii!’  Again ‘Tuluj aiii!’ New leaves sprouted out, turning into a huituc tree she stood up. The other sister who stood  watching said,  ‘I, on the other hand will go up on the hill to stand in their gardens, to be put in their food,  so that they can paint their manioc cuttings, so that they the pale people can paint themselves, we will be turned into things that make people happy……. My sister will be for painting charcoal black.’ With that, ‘Tuluj, Aiii!’ Again ‘Tuluj, Aiii!’  Becoming Manduru she stood up.  Now becoming like that, now they stayed that way.
